Rattan and wicker bar carts, compared

The lightest carts in this category, and the ones least likely to publish a load rating. The specification that actually separates them is whether the weave is a plant or a plastic.

There is one question to settle before any other, and the listings rarely put it in the title: is the weave a plant or a plastic?

Natural rattan is a climbing palm, cut into poles and woven. It is warm, light and genuinely handmade, and it cannot live outdoors — sun makes it brittle and damp makes it swell and stain. PE wicker is polyethylene strand woven over a steel or aluminum frame to look like rattan. It is heavier, it is not handmade, and it will sit on a patio through a season without complaint.

Both are sold as "rattan bar carts" and they photograph almost identically. Buying the wrong one is the main way this category goes wrong. The pick for indoors is the SAFAVIEH Ambrose, which is the only natural rattan cart here that publishes a load rating at all.

What I compared them on

Natural rattan or PE wicker. This decides where the cart can live, how heavy it is, and how it ages. Natural weave is 14 to 21 lb here; the resin carts are 35 and 41.8 lb, because the weave is wrapped around a real metal frame.

Whether anything is published. Woven furniture is sold on texture, and the specification blocks show it. Only two of these five publish a load figure. That is the single biggest difference between this category and the wood carts, where almost everything is rated.

The shelf gap. Nobody publishes this, which is why it gets its own page on this site — except that one cart here does, and it is the largest published gap anywhere in our registry. A standard 750 ml bottle is about 11.8 inches tall, and the gap is what decides whether it stands on the lower shelf or lies on its side. The arithmetic is on the shelf-gap page.

Assembly. Woven carts are the one corner of this market where shipping assembled is normal rather than exceptional — three of these five arrive built.

The five, and who each is for

The pick for indoors (SAFAVIEH Ambrose). Woven rattan and engineered wood in a gray wash on antique brass wheels, 21.1 lb, with 40 lb published for the whole cart — the only natural-rattan cart here with a figure attached. Safavieh also lists it as arriving fully assembled. Against it: at 30.3 inches it is below the 32 to 36 inch serving band, the 40 lb is a whole-cart number rather than per shelf, and woven rattan is the hardest surface here to get a spill out of.

The one with a published gap (bali & pari Lombok). Natural rattan over engineered wood at 14 lb, fully assembled, with side handles — and 18.5 inches published between the lower shelf and the underside of the top. That is the largest published shelf gap in our registry, and it means tall bottles, a shaker and an ice bucket all stand up on the lower shelf rather than lying down. It publishes no load rating, it is one open shelf rather than a full second tier, and 14 lb is light enough that leaning on it moves it.

The handwoven one (bali & pari Selah). Handwoven natural rattan over an internal engineered wood frame, fully assembled, with rounded open sides rather than a boxy silhouette. It publishes the figure this category almost never gives — 15.6 inches between the lower tray and the upper one — which is enough for a standard 11.8-inch bottle to stand on the lower tier with room to lift it out. At 33.9 inches it is also the tallest natural cart here. Against it: no published load rating, no published item weight, and the listing warns plainly that rattan varies in color and grain because it is a natural material.

The outdoor one (Tangkula AM12364HM). PE wicker over metal with tempered glass shelves, 35 lb, 36.22 inches tall and 18.5 inches square. This is the cart to buy if the weave needs to survive a patio: the strand is plastic, the frame is metal and the shelf is glass, so nothing on it minds being rained on. It is heavy for its footprint, it is square rather than wide, and the wicker look is a wrap rather than a weave you would call handmade.

The outdoor one with doors (Xilingol). PE rattan over powder-coated steel with a glass top and an enclosed cabinet, 41.8 lb and 44.5 inches long — the widest thing in this group by a distance, and the only one with a closed compartment. Outdoors, a door is worth more than it is indoors, because it keeps pollen and rain off the glassware. It is also the heaviest cart here, it publishes no load rating, and 44.5 inches needs a genuine run of wall or decking.

Three ways to spot resin without being told

Listings are often vague about which weave you are getting, and the word rattan appears in titles for both. These three checks work from the listing alone.

Read the frame, not the weave. PE wicker has to be wrapped around something, and that something is almost always steel or aluminum. If the materials field mentions metal alongside rattan, the weave is resin. A natural cart lists rattan and engineered wood, or rattan alone.

Check the weight against the size. Natural rattan is extraordinarily light — 14 to 21 lb for a full-size cart here. A cart of similar dimensions at 35 lb or more has a metal frame inside it, whatever the title says.

Look for the word outdoor anywhere on the page. No manufacturer describes natural rattan as suitable for a patio, because it is not, and their legal departments know it. If the listing mentions weather, UV or all-season use, it is resin.

Keeping a woven cart clean

Rattan is the one material in this category with a genuine maintenance routine, and it is worth knowing before you buy rather than after the first spill.

Dust it before you wipe it. A weave holds dust in the gaps between the poles, and a damp cloth dragged across a dusty weave makes mud that dries into the joints. A dry brush or a vacuum with the upholstery head takes thirty seconds and does most of the work.

Damp, never wet. Natural rattan absorbs water and swells, and a swollen weave does not tighten back up — it stays slightly loose, which is how a cart starts to feel rickety without anything actually breaking. Wring the cloth out until it is barely damp, and dry the area afterward.

Deal with a spill immediately, from underneath too. Liquid runs through a weave rather than sitting on it, so what lands on the shelf ends up on the floor and on the underside of the poles. The underside is the part that stays wet, because nobody thinks to dry it.

Keep it out of direct sun even indoors. A cart in a bay window fades unevenly over a year — the side facing the glass goes pale and the back does not. This is the one failure that a PE wicker cart genuinely does not share.

None of that applies to the two resin carts here, which take soap and water like garden furniture, because that is what they are.

There is also a preventive fix worth knowing: a piece of cut glass or clear acrylic laid on the top shelf turns a woven surface into a wipeable one without changing how the cart looks from more than a step away. Glaziers cut small pieces cheaply, and on a natural rattan cart that sits in a room where drinks are actually poured it removes the maintenance problem entirely rather than managing it.

Why so few of them publish a rating

It is worth understanding rather than just complaining about, because it changes how you should load one.

A woven shelf does not fail the way a board fails. A rated board shelf has a single load path — the board bends until it does not — so a number can be tested and printed. A woven panel over a frame carries load at the frame and sags in the middle of the weave long before anything breaks, which makes a single figure awkward to state and easy to misread.

The practical rule that follows: on a woven shelf, weight belongs over the frame rather than in the center of the span. A tray does this for you — it bridges the weave and spreads a bucket or a cluster of bottles across the supported edges. That is the real reason a tray matters more on a rattan cart than on a metal one, and sizes are on bar cart trays.

Weight, and what these carts are actually for

The natural carts here are 14 to 21 lb, which is genuinely light — the Lombok is lighter than a full case of wine. That is the appeal and the limitation in one number.

A light cart moves with one hand, which is what makes it useful in a room where the party migrates. It also moves when you lean on it, which matters if you pour standing at the cart rather than carrying a drink away from it. If you want something that stays put under a heavy pour, the resin carts here at 35 and 41.8 lb do, and so does anything in the wood roundup.

Before you order

Settle natural versus resin first — it decides everything else. Check the height: four of these five sit below the 32 to 36 inch band, which is normal for woven furniture and fine beside low seating, but worth knowing if you intend to stand and pour. Then look for a load figure, and if there is not one, load the cart over its frame rather than in the middle of a span.

And if the room is small, note that the two natural carts here are also among the narrowest in our registry — the broader field for tight rooms is on small bar carts.

Handwoven natural rattan over an internal engineered wood frame, fully assembled, publishing the figure this category almost never gives: 15.6 inches between the lower tray and the upper one. The rounded open sides are the reason to choose it over a boxier cart.

Tangkula Outdoor Rolling Wicker Bar Cart (AM12364HM)

Pick 04 · A drawer outdoors

Tangkula Outdoor Rolling Wicker Bar Cart (AM12364HM)

Tangkula

PE wicker over a metal frame with a tempered glass top and, unusually, a real drawer. A drawer is the thing an open cart never has and the thing a patio most needs, because bottle openers and coasters blow away and cutlery should not sit in the rain.

Not published
Materials
PE wicker, metal, tempered glass
Storage
Open shelf plus one drawer

Specs compiled from: Tangkula AM12364HM published listing, retrieved 2026-09-06.

What is good

  • A closed drawer, which is the one storage type an open cart cannot offer
  • PE wicker is the synthetic rattan patio furniture is made from, not natural cane
  • Tempered glass top wipes clean after pollen, rain or a spill

What is not

  • No published load rating on any surface, including the glass top
  • The same listing gives the size as both 18.5" square and 33.5 by 18.5 inches
  • 35 lb on an 18.5 inch square base is heavy for the footprint

Xilingol Outdoor Wicker Bar Cart with Cabinet

Pick 05 · Closed patio storage

Xilingol Outdoor Wicker Bar Cart with Cabinet

Xilingol

The one on this page that is really an outdoor sideboard on wheels: 44.5 inches long with a 54 gallon closed cabinet under a tempered glass top. It publishes a 50 lb tabletop limit, which is a smaller number than the size suggests and worth reading before you set a full cooler on it.

Dimensions

Weight
41.8 lb
Tabletop load
50 lb
Storage
54 gal cabinet, 20 gal open shelf
Materials
PE rattan, powder-coated steel, glass

Specs compiled from: Xilingol outdoor wicker bar cart published listing, retrieved 2026-09-06.

What is good

  • 54 gallons of closed storage, so cushions and bottles overwinter in place
  • It publishes a tabletop load figure at all, which most outdoor carts do not
  • Lockable wheels on a 41.8 lb frame that does not drift on decking

What is not

  • 50 lb on the tabletop is low for a 44.5 inch surface — about seventeen bottles
  • 44.5 inches of length needs a wall, and outdoors that usually means the house wall
  • The open shelf and cabinet sizes are published separately and do not obviously add up

How these were picked

I have not tested any of these carts. What I did instead: compiled the published specifications from each listing, recorded the figures with their source, checked the footprint against the clearances a real room has, worked out how many standard bottles a stated shelf actually holds, and named the one I would skip. Where two listings for the same cart disagree, the page says so rather than quietly picking one.

Frequently asked

Questions

Can a rattan bar cart go outside?
Only if the weave is PE wicker — polyethylene strand over a metal frame. Natural rattan is a plant fiber: sun makes it brittle and damp swells it, and neither is reversible. A covered porch is survivable for natural rattan; an open deck is not.
How much weight does a rattan bar cart hold?
Most do not say. Of the five compared here only the SAFAVIEH Ambrose publishes a figure — 40 lb for the whole cart, about fourteen full 750 ml bottles. On an unrated woven shelf, keep weight over the frame rather than in the middle of the span, and use a tray to bridge the weave.
Do rattan bar carts come assembled?
More often than the rest of this category. The SAFAVIEH Ambrose and both bali & pari carts — the Lombok and the Selah — are all listed as arriving fully assembled, which is one of the practical advantages of woven furniture.
Which rattan bar cart fits tall bottles best?
The bali & pari Lombok, which publishes 18.5 inches between the lower shelf and the underside of the top — the largest published gap in our registry, and about seven inches more than a standard 750 ml bottle needs.
