The decor that earns its space

Bar cart decor articles usually recommend objects that do nothing. On a surface of about three square feet, an object that does nothing is competing directly with an object that does something, and the useful one should win.

So this is a shorter list than most: four things that decorate a cart and earn their footprint, with published dimensions so you can check them against your shelf before buying.

1. An ice bucket, chosen by height

The best decorative object on a bar cart is a metal ice bucket, because it is reflective, it is mid-height — the height most carts are short of — and it holds ice.

Buy it by height, not capacity. The two 3-quart buckets we compiled hold the same amount of ice at 8 inches and 10.4 inches tall. On a three-tier cart with roughly 8.5 inch shelf gaps, that difference decides whether it can live anywhere except the top shelf.

2. A tool stand

A bartender kit on an upright stand converts eight loose objects into one and uses vertical space, which is the space a cart has spare. It also puts metal at eye level, which catches light.

The footprint check matters: a compact stand needs about a 5 inch square, while the largest set we compiled is published at 12.01 inches wide — wider than six of the sixteen carts in our dimensions table are deep.

3. Good glassware, stored visibly

Glassware is decor that you were going to buy anyway. A set of four coupes standing on the middle shelf does more visual work than any ornament, because it signals what the cart is for.

The Libbey Signature Greenwich set is here rather than a restaurant case for one reason: it comes in fours. Four is what a cart wants; twelve is a foodservice quantity. Published at 3.9 by 3.9 by 6.5 inches, so check the shelf gap.

4. A tray, which is not on this list and should be

The single most transformative object on a bar cart is a tray, and I have not put one in the picks above because I could not find a specific tray with published dimensions I was willing to stand behind. That is the honest reason.

What I can tell you is the specification to shop for: around 12 by 16 inches if your cart is 15 inches deep or more, smaller or round if it is not, with a lip that is raised enough to catch a spill and low enough that you can slide a bottle over it. Anything meeting that description will do the job.

The arrangement matters more than the objects

Everything above is secondary to grouping, height variation and leaving a visible gap. A cart with three well-chosen objects arranged badly looks worse than a cart with six ordinary ones arranged well. The method is in how to style a bar cart.
